The Other People Place – Eye Contact

Sublime Electro as imagined by Detroit Techno; from the prolific, mercurial, and sadly missed James Stinson of Drexciya fame. This is from the 2001 album ‘Lifestyles Of The Laptop Café’, which is as magnificent throughout as this track would suggest. Go seek.

Deepchord – Point Reyes

Mr Modell gives us some super-submerged Dub Techno with a few whiplashes that rise to the surface. This is from the sublime new album ‘Auratones’.

Dark Energy/Suburban Knight – Midnight Sunshine

Classic Detroit Techno from UR man James Penningtom a.k.a Suburban Knight. This was originally released under the Suburban Knight moniker on a UR EP from 1994 called ‘Dark Energy’. It has been re-released on a collection of tracks from Pennington under the guise of Dark Energy titled ‘Collided Energy’, released in 2007. This track is in keeping with the classic Motor City sound; lush, warm, yet driving and pulsing Techno. The story behind the title of the track was revealed by Pennington  in an interview with Kodwo Eshun.
His grandfather was fighting as a GI in Germany in the second world war. One night the German shot flares into the sky which he stated lit up like a midnight sun.

Model 500 – Mind Changes

Classic Detroit Techno from 1992 with a track from Juan Atkins’s Model 500 project. This was from ‘The Passage’ EP, and is the standout track. Hi tech Soul with some synthetic melancholic edges.

Jeff Mills – Exhibitionist 2 DVD 1 PART 1

Jeff delivering the more tripped out, galactic end of the Motor City sound; and lowers the pace that he was once known for. Great stuff from his 2015 DVD.

Jeff Mills – Dagma

Jeff Mills making a score for Metropolis made sense; him doing a score for a Buster Keaton film was far more likely to have people scratching their head. However, what resulted from this was a rather Wonderful album of lush, intricate Detroit Techno from 2000.

Drexciya – Black Sea

Tough Techno from the mysterious Detroit team. Hard, aquatic tune from 1995.

Model 500 – Off To Battle

From the B-Side to 1987’s ‘Sound Of Stereo’, Juan Atkins hands us the classic Detroit Techno blueprint yet again. Digi funk and Hi-Tech Soul right here my brothers and sisters.

Jeff Mills – The Serenade

Classy, sleek, light-as-a-feather Techno from the Detroit legend; off of his 2000 album ‘Three Ages’.
