Kraftwerk – Köln II (1971)

The birth of NEU!, live on German TV back in 1971.

Terry Riley / Don Cherry ‎– Köln (Live, February 23, 1975 – Full Album)

An incredible document of a transcendental gig featuring these two titans. Lush, dreamlike, and beautiful. Here is the album in its entirety.

Tracklist.

1 – Descending Moonshine Dervishes (00:00)

2 – Sunrise Of The Planetary Dream Collector (19:44)

3 – Köln Improvisation (27:57)

Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band – When Big Joan Sets Up (Live in Detroit 15/01/1971)

This was pretty soon after the Captain and his band emerged form the house on Ensenada drive in the woodland hills, after spending 8 months cooped up (and in the case of the band members, imprisoned) rehearsing and recording the seminal ‘Trout Mask Replica’ album. As one can see in this performance, Don Van Vliet looks pretty well fed, whilst the rest of them look scrawny, wild eyed and manic. One can only imagine what it was like in that house, where the atmosphere must have been akin to living within an intense cult; but the stunning results are undeniable when one listens to the ‘Trout Mask Replica’ album, or to this gig where the band blast out tangles, intricate, hyped-up Avant-Rock of the highest order.

Nurse With Wound – Let’s Go Johnny (Live in Amsterdam, 8.12.1984)

Oh yes, live Nurse With Wound from back when a live experience was extremely rare. Diana Rogerson features heavily on this vicious romp through various takes on the Nurse catalogue. We get ‘Dance of Fools’ in there somewhere, as well as the cover of Red Noise that appears on ‘Sylvie & Babs’. Raw, chaotic, uncompromising stuff.

Captain Beefheart And His Magic Band – Electricity (Cannes Live 1968)

Don and His Magic Band (who truly live up to their name here) juggle fiery demon blues and witchy Americana; managing to keep all the volatile ingredients in place and delivering grooves and thangs. Also, was nice to see this song referenced in Twin Peaks: the Return. Did anyone notice?

Kraftwerk – Heavy Metal Kids

This is from the 1st phase of Kraftwerk, where they sounded like NEU! as imagined by Faust (the NEU! connection was obviously due to the fact that Klaus Dinger and Michael Rother were the rhythmic backbone of this incarnation). This is from some live material from 1971, about a year after they released their absolutely stunning debut album on Phillips; and is definitely in the same vein. Ralf Hütter was taking a break around this time, so this is essentially NEU! with Florian Schneider. (Kraut) Rock on!

Devo – Praying Hands + Shrivel up Live 1975

Devo being DOVE (the band of Love) back in 1975; playing some of the hits from their debut album.

Heartthrob – The Bunker Podcast 143

Podcast of a recent live jam with mostly new and unreleased material from Jesse Siminski a.k.a Heartthrob. Does this mean there’s a long overdue album from him? Who know’s (even some EP’s would be nice), but his style and panache is still on display, and demonstrates why he was always heads above the crown in the minimal scene. The final track of this mix is really fantastic, and has all of the hallmarks of a 4am track. Enjoy!

Henry Cow – Beautiful As The Moon; Terrible As An Army With Banners (Live 1976)

Incredible footage of a band who, judging from this and bearing in mind the composition,  rehearsed like mad. This is when Slapp Happy front Woman Dagmar Krause joined in with proceedings (which led to the wonderful Art Bears), and the band took their RIP sound right out there. Cutler’s drumming is just phenomenal; and he looked like as much as an octopus as he always sounded on record. This is a 1976 live version of a track from the bands 1975 album ‘In Praise Of Learning’.

Warmduscher – Uncle Sleepover (Live @ The Windmill; Brixton 26/01/2017)

Scuzzy Nu psych Garage from London’s wonderful Warmduscher. This whole gig was fantastic, and could penetrate the most jaded soul.
