Phil MFU – Marooned On Mercury

Hot space funk* that’s made its way to you from Philadelphia; via Cambridge, London, and (of course) Mercury. This is from Phil’s forthcoming EP titled ‘Hot Sauce’, out in December 2018 on Freaksville Records.

  • with Thomas Broda on drums.

Brian Eno & David Byrne – Moonlight in Glory

Another great slice of Avant-Funk/Electronica from Eno & Byrne’s seminal 1981 album ‘My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts’. This one has a very haunting feel to it, with sampled voices that give us snapshots of a narrative which leaves one with a sense of ambiguity. Is the old lady letting in friend or foe? Finding out where these voice samples come from has appeared to be fruitless so far, as the only nod to a sample in the track is from the ‘Moving Hall Star Singers’; from their track ‘Moonlight in Glory’*, where Byrne & Eno nicked the title from. So the narrative will always remain a mystery, and will always have a touch of menace to it, and maybe that’s for the best.

  • track this down if you can, it’s incredible.

now – Little Bits Inside Of You (live @ New River Studios: London 12/5/18)

This Saturday just gone, London band now celebrated 20 years of activity with a gig at New River Studios, where they invited as many past members as they could to join in during their 2 sets. This here is an example of the results; with a live rendition of their wonderfully funky track from their 2006 album ‘Frisbee Hot Pot’.

Brian Eno & David Byrne – America is Waiting

The opener from the duo’s stone cold classic 1981 album ‘My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts’ is all electronic pops, drum breaks, and serrated guitar. Dig, you dig?

Prince – Something In The Water (Does Not Compute)

A wonderful future funk track from Prince’s fifth studio album; 1982’s ‘1999’. This could be a contender for the tag ‘Minneapolis Techno’, and surely stands as one of the records that influenced the Motor City guys. Fantastic tune.

*This is a fan made video, just to let you know.

Prince & the Revolution – Tambourine

Today is 32 years to the day since Prince (who passed away a year yesterday) released an album that was a wonderful example of 80’s Psychedelic Soul, ‘Around The World In A Day’; a work that was mirrored by the following album ‘Parade’. This track is a taut slice of Avant-Funk a la Prince, with a frosty sexiness quivering throughout.
